In keeping with the mandate of the Buckhorn Fine Art Festival to recognize and support contemporary artistic talent, one award of $500.00 is available annually:
To be awarded to an adult (age 17 or older), pursuing an education in the visual arts at a recognized Canadian art institution, who demonstrates community involvement and is in need of nurturing support and recognition.

Laura Butler: Recipient of the 2017 Buckhorn Fine Art Award
Laura has been accepted into Western University’s Fine Art Program. She was 1 of only 30 students accepted. Her work consists of various materials and subject matter. She enjoys creating thematic series the most. After university Laura is going to complete a 2 year Master’s Program in Fine At. Laura is a very ambitious individual and her passion is visual arts. Her goal is to become a working artist or a professor at college or university in the arts program.
Ariel Weiss: Recipient of the 2016 Buckhorn Fine Art Award
Ariel is a student at Sheridan College in the Visual and Creative Arts program. Ariel uses a lot of hands and natural elements in her work. Often presented in an abstract dimension. She loves to experiment in many different mediums. She works in the gallery/cultural centre in Minden and has volunteered at the Rail’s End Gallery in Haliburton as well as curating a show for a grade twelve art class. Ariel has also won first prize for best drawing in the Bancroft Juried High School art exhibit.
Erin Satterley: Recipient of the 2015 Buckhorn Fine Art Award
Erin Satterley has just completed the two-year Visual and Creative Arts program at Sheridan College, and will be starting the Bachelor of Illustration program (also at Sheridan) in the fall of 2015. She has be a volunteer for several years at the Buckhorn Fine Art Festival, as well as at the Buckhorn Community Centre’s Spring and Harvest Craft Shows. She hopes to be a wildlife illustrator upon completion of her studies.
Kathleen Murray: Recipient of the 2013 Buckhorn Fine Art Award
Born in 1993, Kathleen Murray is a devoted Canadian wildlife painter and photographer. She grew up in Mississauga Ontario and spent the summers in the Algoma area near Sault Ste Marie. Kathleen is currently in her third year at university, working towards a Bachelor of Fine Art at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay. She has volunteered at her former high school as an assistant art instructor, and has worked as a summer art counsellor for children at the Algoma Art Gallery.
“I have always been enthralled by nature and this is what most of my art is influenced by. When I’m up north I always have my camera on me – I guess you could say that I stalk the local wildlife with my lens. Finding great backgrounds and wildlife for my paintings is always exciting.”
Kathleen’s goal is to be a well-known and accomplished wildlife artist someday.
